Today the Way Out West lineup is expanded with gospel, broken indie, and a cappella—welcome Mavis Staples [US], Yukimi, Jjulius, Annie & The Caldwells [US], Bartees Strange [US], Becky and the Birds, La Lom [US], and The Joy [RSA].
Mavis Staples is a legend. But unlike many recipients of that adjective, Mavis has upheld a striking relevance throughout the decades. After the family group The Staple Singers disbanded, the Chicago raised singer and civil rights activist continued to release formidable albums where she funneled her unmistakable, soulful energy. With a blend of R&B, gospel and soul and that mighty voice that Rolling Stone Magazine once dubbed one of the greatest of all time, the now 85-year-old remains more significant than ever.
The Gothenburg connection is strong this time. Disco, post-punk, The Fall, lo-fi pop, Arthur Russell, surreal yet intimate everyday lyrics—defining Gothenburg’s new indie hero Jjulius is no easy task. But then again, not everything is meant to be simple. A boldness that caught the attention of the influential record label DFA, which decided to release Jjulius’s last two albums, Vol.2 from 2022 and Vol.3, which was released earlier this year.
On her fantastic debut album For You, Yukimi deviates from the band’s danceable yet intricate electronic pop and explores a softer, minimalist, and jazz-influenced approach without losing the undeniable connection to the present day that we have come to associate with her. For You also contains some of the most vulnerable and personal lyrics she has ever written. Don’t miss the incomparable Yukimi at this year’s Way Out West.
In addition, we’re treated to family soul from Annie & The Caldwells, instrumental tones by L.A. collective La Lom, the a cappella choir The Joy from South Africa, eclectic indie from Bartees Strange, and Grammy-winning 4AD-released artist and producer Becky and the Birds.
More acts will be announced soon. The 3-day tickets – Youth, Standard, and Premium – are selling the fastest and will likely sell out soon. Don’t wait to make your purchase this year.
