When Alba August, at a live broadcast of the Grammis gala, sang her heart out in the gripping song “Isabelle,” it became clear: A new star had risen in the Swedish music sky. Actor or not, the emotionally charged performance erased any doubts and turned them into distinct exclamation points. Just like her role model Kate Bush, August takes her cue from the dramatic and unexpected. Over driving drums and expansive synth layers, she sings powerfully and unfiltered about anger, love, and the longing for light in a way that tears down all defenses. This spring she’s toured Sweden and next up will be an intimate club show at Stay Out West.
