Mavis Staples is a legend. But unlike many recipients of that adjective, Mavis has upheld a striking relevance throughout the decades. After the family group The Staple Singers disbanded, the Chicago raised singer and civil rights activist continued to release formidable albums where she funneled her unmistakable, soulful energy. With a blend of R&B, gospel and soul and that mighty voice that Rolling Stone Magazine once dubbed one of the greatest of all time, the now 85-year-old remains more significant than ever. From the late 2000s, she entered a new stage of her career with a string of celebrated albums including the collaboration with Jeff Tweedy on ‘You Are Not Alone’ (2010) which won her a Grammy. In 2022 she released the equally celebrated ‘Carry Me Home’ together with Levon Helm and last year she shared the single ‘Worthy’.
